After five years of traveling the state serving hungry eventgoers from a food truck, co-owners Steve Fiebieer and Kim Reid have opened Steven D’s in the Town Square skyway at 445 Minnesota St. The restaurant specializes in “hand-patted, never-frozen burgers” and also offers soups, salads and homey specials like a loaded baked potato. Vegetables are sourced from the St. Paul Farmers Market, and quick-grab breakfast bites and bakery items came online with the new year. Fiebieer will continue trucking their food trailer to big events year-round, and Reid will manage the skyway location. An additional truck is also in the works.

“We’re both St. Paul people and the food truck started to get a little exhausting,” said Reid. “I looked at Steven and said, ‘I want a brick and mortar [restaurant], and I want one in the skyway.’”

The climate-controlled environment and consistent hours were the main driver for Reid, and it didn’t take them long to find the former Cassie’s space, which closed in May. The St. Paul Downtown Alliance assisted with lease negotiations and provided a few months of free rent through its Grow Downtown program. The owners have since signed on for 10 years.

Reid and Fiebieer operated a cleaning company for many years before pivoting into the food industry. Both had some restaurant experience and were drawn to doing something more involved in the community. Reid’s brother and sister-in-law are both chefs and helped them fine-tune their plans.

“We accidentally fell into the powwow circuit and made a name for ourselves,” said Reid, of the food truck. “We were at a brewery in New Prague and someone came up and asked if we’d be interested in doing a small local casino event – it was the Shakopee Powwow, which is one of the largest in the country…. Then more and more people would come up and ask us to come to theirs. The Native population in the Cities is so very welcoming.” Steven D’s will be at a powwow at Johnson
High School on the East Side Feb. 21-22, and another at St. Francis High School on Feb. 28.

Reid said the skyway feels safe and is a great fit for them, however she voiced some concerns that there aren’t as many people traveling through them as they expected.

“We had believed that downtown St. Paul was going to come back,” said Reid. “Now it’s getting scary…. But we are not giving up. We are going to persevere.”

Restaurant hours are weekdays 7 a.m.-2 p.m., and a website will be up soon so people can order ahead. Evening hours and occasional Saturdays will be added in the near future. They also plan to get involved in community events, such as the Skyway 5K taking place Feb. 28. The run starts at 9 a.m. and covers all 47 city blocks of the skyway system. Staff will be handing out water for runners.
