Special election results

Voters turned down the Special School District 6 building bond request at the special election held in mid-May, by a margin of 43.34% (yes) to 56.66% (no). The request was for $50 million to complete the most critical of $150 million in deferred maintenance projects across District facilities. $30 million was earmarked for work at the high school including mechanical system upgrades, roof repairs, accessibility improvements, upgrades to technology labs, and improvements to outdoor athletic facilities. Another $3.4 million was slated for mechanical upgrades, safety improvements and restroom renovations at Central Square Community Center, and $15 million for the same projects at Lincoln Center Elementary.

Also denied at the special election was the District’s request to preemptively renew its capital projects levy which is set to expire in 2029 — 46.07% voted in favor, and 53.93% voted against. The levy supports annual upgrades for things such as security, technology and administration, and the renewal proposal estimated $11.39 million would have been raised over 10 years. The District hasn’t asked voters to approve a new building bond for 12 years. However, an operating referendum was approved in 2022, increasing property taxes $444 annually on a median valued home.
